Kempston Concert Band
Kempston Concert Band was founded in 1972 in order to give wind and percussion players in North Bedfordshire an opportunity to perform together. From quite early on Terry Hext became the musical director, a role he continued until the beginning of 2006. In 1992 it was felt that a junior band was required and this was established under the directorship of Marion Hext, who also retired from the band at the beginning of 2006. The Hexts have left a lasting legacy and are still keen supporters of both bands.
Following the retirement of the Hexts, Gareth King a former member of the band who had recently moved back into the area and rejoined the band took over as musical director of both bands, having already taken over as conductor of the combi band (an amalgamation of both bands) in 2005.
Kempston Concert Band perform three formal concerts each year at the end of each term (Spring, Summer and at Christmas) these take place at Kempston East Methodist Church. In addition, the bands perform at various other events throughout the year. For more information about our concert dates please see our dates page. Kempston Concert Band donate the profits from some of their concerts to local charitable organisations. For more information about the charities we have supported please visit our charity page.
We have a wide variety of pieces in our music library and add additional pieces on a regular basis. The bands play a varied repertoire of music throughout the year and we are more than happy to accept requests for particular pieces and styles.
At present we have approximately 20 members in the Junior Band and 30 members in the Senior Band. We are always happy to welcome new members of all ages, abilities and disciplines as we believe you can never have too many players!
